Analysis of Story Of The Three LIttle Bears by Eleanor Mure - Essay Example After reading the short story, I could feel no gratification at all, especially since the ending is quite unusual. Unlike in most childrenââ¬â¢s stories that have a happy ending or a lesson, the significant lesson to be learned from the story is not quite clear to me, and I think this would be the case for children who would read this too. It implies punishment for people who do not respect other peopleââ¬â¢s property. For me, this would not be effective. Rewards would be more appealing in teaching children. Perhaps one of the lessons that the author tries to teach here is that of moderation. Goldilocks finds herself choosing the middle path. She likes the porridge that is not too warm nor too cold; she chooses the chair that is not too hard nor too soft; and she prefers the bed that does not have too much space above her head or below her feet. Yet, if this lesson is indeed the intention of this story, then it is not clear as no obvious rewards are given for her actions. On the contrary, punishment is implied for Goldilocks at the end of the story. It troubles me that the words ââ¬Å"she broke her neckâ⬠were used at the end to imply punishment for her rude and disrespectful behavior. But then again, whether or not she was indeed punished is left for the reader to guess, as there was no trace of her and the bears never saw her again. I find this quite troubling, since it makes me wonder what the point of the story really is. There is no clear reward or punishment for the actions that Goldilocks did, and thus, whatever the lesson this story is supposed to teach children is not reinforced. During the course of the story, I felt a sense of hope that it would end up great. Since the bears were polite and good-natured, I was hoping that they would forgive Goldilocks for what she did. This initial idea of a marketing mix originated in the 1960s when developed by Neil Borden in his book: The Concept of the Marketing Mix (Borden, 1965) In this article Borden lists various elements of the marketing mix for manufacturers, twelve in total, stating the list can be long or short depending on how far one wishes to go in his classification and sub-classification of the marketing procedures. From this list has derived the four Ps of the marketing mix we know today. These four Ps make up the raw product without any service factor, the actual product, where it is sold, the promotion to the target consumer and the selling price. There is arguably no evidence to show any kind of customer service in the four Ps marketing mix, can be thought of as distinctly producer-orientated. (Kotler, Armstrong, Harker, Brennan, 2009) Product Distinctions Theoretical issues of Intangibility, Heterogeneity, Inseparability and Perishability are as follows Intangibility is a unique characteristic of service which cannot be seen physically, felt, tasted or touched as physical goods are. For example when we watch a movie in the theatre, we are entertained by watching it. Entertainment is the output of the service that is delivered. Issues caused by intangibility are Lack of service inventories: Services cannot be stored as the physical goods are. Lack of patent protection: As services are intangible, they cannot be patent protected as the physical goods are. Service offered by one firm can be also offered by other company in different way. Difficulty in communicating services: Goods can be physically displayed, but whereas services are not physically shown to customers. Its hard for the companies to convince the customer to buy make the products that are offered as services. E.g. Insurance Difficulty in pricing services: Services offered by companies differ and no two services can be same as customers needs are different. Services are customised and hence tend to have fixed pricing. Heterogeneity is a unique characteristic of service that reflects the difference in the service that is provided from one customer to other customer. For example when a customer goes to a restaurant and ordered food would be different kind from the other customer and no customers experience is the same. Similarly no ones custom made jewellery looks alike as its unique to the customers requirements. Issues caused by heterogeneity Service standardization and quality control are difficult to achieve Services provided by different providers within the same location tend to be same. Mood and skills of a single provider differ from day-to-day Inseparability is a unique characteristic of service which displays the association between the people or company which provides service and the person who is engaged in receiving the service and also other customers who are indirectly or directly getting the knowledge. For example when a customer wants to take an internet connection, the sales team of the internet company need not interact face to face with the customer to give the information about the product. But whereas in a production process like Saloon, the customer has to be physically present to get his hair cut. Issues caused by inseparability Physical connection of the service provider to the service: In order to provide the service to the customer, the service provider has to be physically present and Face-to-face interaction with customers makes employees satisfaction critical when they are not able to provide proper guidance to customers. Involvement of the customer in the production processes: Customers involvement may vary according to the requirement that the customer be physically present to receive the service, i.e. for a dental service, customer has to be physically present in order to solve his or her problem related to teeth. Involvement of other customers in the production process: Customers presence is required in some service and some customers often share a common service experience and that shared experience can be negative or positive depending upon the experience the customer gets out of the service he has received. Perishability is a unique characteristic of service in which the service cannot be saved. Unused services cannot be reserved or neither can be inventoried. For example seats in a theatre can be inventoried for a period of time before the purchase of the ticket and cannot be inventoried after the show is finished. Another example of perishability is fresh meat, it can be stored for certain time period but once it sold it is completely perished. Issues caused by Perishability Matching supply and demand is a major challenge for the service provider, if there is a higher demand of service, than service providers tend to make the supply of the service maximum. When there is a higher demand, than the service provider gives optimal supply level. Avivas services marketing mix Product There is no point in developing a product or service that no one wants to buy. Companies try to find out what the customers need and then develop the right product that attracts customers. A produce is we produce. If we produce goods it means tangible product and when we produce or generate services, it means intangible service product. A product is what a seller sells and what buyer buys. Thus, Aviva provides insurance services and therefore insurance services are their products. Aviva is the leading company offering insurance services to the users. Apart from offering life insurance policies, they also offer underwriting and consulting services. When a person or an organisation buys an Insurance policy from Aviva, he buys a policy along with it the assistance and the prestige of the insurance company and the facilities of claims and compensation. It is natural that the customers expect a reasonable return for their investment and Aviva as insurance company wants to maximize their profitability. Aviva would have intangibility issue as the company can introduce new insurance scheme which would give the customer the advantage of having to take single insurance policy for the whole family. The company can protect the product brand but it cannot restrict other insurance companies to come up with similar scheme with a different name, hence there is lack of patent protection. The company provides different schemes according to the customers needs and the pricing of the insurance is not the same for every customer. Pricing A product is only worth what customers are prepared to pay for it and the price needs to be competitive. In insurance business the pricing decisions are concerned with the premium charged against the policies that a customer would take and also interest is charged for defaulting the payment of premium. The factors that Aviva uses for determining the premium rates under a life insurance plan are mortality, expense and interest. The premium rates are revised if there are any significant changes like Mortality: When deciding upon the pricing strategy the average rate of mortality is one of the main considerations that it takes in to care. Expenses: The cost of processing, commission to agents, reinsurance companies as well as registration are all incorporated into the cost of instalments, premium sum and forms the integral part of the pricing strategy. Interest: Rate of interest is one of the major factors which determine if the customers willingness to invest in insurance. Customers will not be willing to put their funds to invest in insurance if the interest rates provided by financial institutions are much greater than the perceived returns from the insurance premiums. Aviva would have intangibility issue in pricing, Aviva provides different kinds of insurances. Customers tend to choose which product they would want to opt and as insurance is not same for all the customers the price varies depending on the premium and the term that a customer is will to go for. Place The place where customers buy a product must be appropriate and convenient for the customer and the product must be available in the right place at the right time. This helps the company to process the services to the end-user so that the gap between services that are promised and services that are offered is bridged over. Taking product classification in to account when dealing with marketing of services, it expands the understanding of the original 4ps. The Insurance business deals in selling services and therefore due weightage in the formation of marketing mix for the Insurance business is needed. The marketing mix includes sub-mixes of the 7 Ps of marketing i.e. the product, its price, place, promotion, people, process physical attraction. The above mentioned 7 Ps can be used for marketing of Insurance products. The services that Aviva offers as mentioned above is affected by issues of classification of being Intangibility, Heterogeneity, Inseparability and Perishability which based on the researched information is performed well by the business. Rocking Horse Winner and The Destructors There are many differences and similarities between Graham Greeneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠and D.H. Lawrenceââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Rocking Horse Winner.â⬠One general difference is that in ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠the setting is in Great Britain, after the bombing had happened during World War 1, when the buildings were destroyed. The setting of ââ¬Å"Rocking Horse Winnerâ⬠is a suburban community located on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland. This one distinct difference affects the entire background of each story. The setting of ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠brings mood and feeling into the story were ass the setting of ââ¬Å"Rocking Horse Winnerâ⬠is just a general setting which could be changed and would not have a significant affect on the story as a whole. One general similarity between the two stories is that they both have a young boy as the main character, but the use of this character is very different in each story. The boy in ââ¬Å"Rocking Horse Winnerâ⬠is more innocent and unknowing of the evil the world can hold, he also hasnââ¬â¢t reached the rebellion stage of adolescence. In the other story ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠you have ââ¬Å"Tâ⬠who comes from a high class English family but is forced into poverty by the war, but he has already begun his rebellion against what is ââ¬Å"good.â⬠The similarities and differences between money, class, and family values in the stories are much more significant because they have more affect on each story and on the reader. Rizal, My Hero
Rizal, my Hero! ââ¬Å"A hero is a man who is afraid to run away ââ¬â (English Proverb)â⬠. Indeed, a man who has a brave heart would not choose to run away but instead give the good fight he can give. Truly, Rizal deserves to be the hero of this Country. Like what Zaide wrote ââ¬Å"He (Rizal) was not quarrelsome by nature, but he never ran away from a fightâ⬠. Every hero has its own exemplary deeds but for me, Rizal, is one of the best Heros because of his patriotic services in his country.From his writings to his good communications with other people, foreign or Filipino, he proved to be the best man living in his time and until now. I was so amazed by his bravery that though he already knows that what he plans to do would might lose his head. I so canââ¬â¢t imagine that I will do such exemplary thing to my fellowmen like what Rizal did especially to Dapitan when he was an exile. I consider him my hero because I was deeply touched by his writings, through his writi ngs I was awakened by some of his noble thoughts.Though he is not revolutionary in nature he knows what to do to make this country free from Spanish tyranny and I consider that he is not imprudent because I know he already think what might happen and if that never happen he would accept it. I admire of how he handle things, somehow. Rizal is the hero of the poor Filipino that is hungry for freedom while heââ¬â¢s my hero because he thought me to be the best that I can be. Though he is intelligent in nature and I am not that so, I was inspired to excel in any ways that I can be as what his theme in his poem ââ¬Å"To the Filipino Youthâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Grow, O Timid Flowerâ⬠.He is a remarkable one and I am not, but through reading and discovering more of him I learned that he did not consider himself as a very noble person but he did what he can do in this country. I learned that you donââ¬â¢t have to look over what you canââ¬â¢t do in this country but look what you can do in this country. A simple good deed to your fellow men is truly remarkable already. I may not be like him that has done many things in this country, through him if he is not a Filipino I might not know what the importance of being a Filipino Youth is.Like what he said ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the years of the youth should be employed in something nobler and lofty for the very reason that youth is noble and loftyâ⬠¦ â⬠When I was a kid when my teacher asked ââ¬Å"Who is our national hero? â⬠, ââ¬Å"of course, itââ¬â¢s Jose Rizalâ⬠but I donââ¬â¢t have a deeper knowledge about him. Now that I am a fully grown youth, I was able to know through his life what I must and what I can do. Rizal is an example of a noble youth. I might not be as nobler as he but using him as an example, I can also leave a legacy to my family and relative and most of all to other Filipino Youth. Without education and liberty, which are the soil and the sun of man, no reform is possible; no mea sure can give the result desired ââ¬â (Indolence of the Filipinos-La Solidaridad)â⬠. I find education really important as what he thought of it. And I would do the best that I can to excel and not just to pass and to be also exemplary in the eyes of every Filipino. Mexican society Essay
Mariano Azuelaââ¬â¢s, The Underdogs, is full of characters that represent different sections of the Mexican society at the time of the Mexican Revolution around 1910 and each responds to the war according to their own circumstances and needs. The first such character is Demetrio Macias, a peace loving Indian, representing the poor peasants. His only interest is to protect what little he has. He is drawn into the revolution when he is being hunted by the soldiers of a political leader and he has to abandon his wife and child and watch the soldiers destroy his house. Demetrio responds by putting together a band of sharpshooting bandits who are wanted for various crimes they have committed At the start, Demetrio is full of noble ideas and wants to fight for the poor while taking from the rich, something like Robin Hood. The group is focused and meets with success. However as his group grows larger it becomes more difficult to control, because with each victory comes power and with that the demands. For instance, after each successful battle they feel justified in taking all girls above twelve years of age to ââ¬Å"serviceâ⬠them. As time goes on, the rebels themselves forget what they are fighting for and start taking from the rich and poor alike Luis Cervantes, is a student portraying the educated middle class. He is captured by Demetrioââ¬â¢s men and manages to convince them that is a deserter of Huertasââ¬â¢ army and was actually trying to join them. He is unhappy with the treachery, and corruption in the Huertasââ¬â¢ army. The unnecessary meanness of the soldiers, rape, burning of homes, looting, torture, murdering of children. 1 Luis is a young man with ideals and a vision for the future. He believes that doing away with the crooked politicians will make Mexico a better place for everyone. While he imparts his wisdom on the bandits, some of them speculate if that is indeed what they are really all about, while majority just dreams about the booty the next town will bring. Luisââ¬â¢ unsuccessful attempts at conveying his insight to the bandits eventually cause him to change his direction and go in search of a business venture instead. The next characters we meet in the story are two women, who symbolize the role of the fairer sex in the Mexican war. First there is Camilla, who provides services such as cooking, or caring for the wounded. Although initially she comes across as a meek person, we see eventually that she is really a strong woman who has a major role to play in Demetrioââ¬â¢s life. Finally, there is ââ¬Å"War Paint. â⬠A very jealous and bold woman, who is always ready to rob anyone in her path. She uses sex to manipulate men and get what she wants. For example, at one point in the story Demetrio is ready to take her to a hotel after drinking heavily. She challenges his manhood by saying that a real man of his standing would find the best house in town, take it over by force if necessary and spend the night there. Thus, they spend the night in one of the best houses in town, and War Paint proceeds to rob it after entertaining Demetrio. It seems to me that the only person somewhat sincere with the revolution is Demetrio. After all he is the only one not willing to run away. He stands his ground and fights for what he believes in, despite the fact that the importance and force of revolution had lost its steam, and knowing in the end that he is outnumbered and will not survive. 1Cogan, Allan .
